For the first time in its history, Belgorod State University obtained an EAC Certificate (EurAseC Conformity) which now records BelSU in the common register as both applicant and manufacturer of a product. Many years of scientists’ work have been invested in the unique result achieved at the BelSU Research Institute of Pharmacology of Living Systems.

Started as part of a doctoral dissertation on the properties of a natural phenol resveratrol – one of the most powerful antioxidants, the research resulted in registration of a new product – Rezvitrin, a supplement with clinically-backed ingredients. The innovative liquid supplement derived from the concentrate of red grape berries, complies with all Technical Regulations of the Customs Union on food product safety and labelling.

BelSU scientists also developed perfect dosage and regimen for taking the new supplement. As explained by the director of the BelSU Research Institute of Pharmacology of Living Systems, Prof. Mikhail Pokrovsky, at the modern market of dietary supplements, Rezvitrin is not just another one of hundreds of thousands in stock.

Rezvitrin is based on the scientific concept of the biological activity resveratrol – a polyphenol found in the skin of red grapes, which counts over 50 years of development. A team of scientists led by Professor Pokrovsky, offered a nutrition supplement that protects from oxidative stress, which is important for people who need it and potential patients.

According to the director of the BelSU United Centre for Genetic Technologies, Сand.Sc.Biology Alexey Deykin, researchers are considering the registered supplement from the point of view of evidence-based medicine/ they also plan to subject the registered supplement to a rigorous evaluation process of all trials usually conducted to evaluate the safety and efficacy of drugs intended for human participants.

‘We are very impressed by the approach of Mikhail Pokrovsky as a practicing pharmacologist, scientist and industrial researcher of drugs, which presumes ineffectiveness of preventive medication. None of us would want to swallow handfuls of pills. At the same time, we eat and drink regularly, so preventing disease through nutrition is key to healthy longevity,’ explained Alexey Deykin.

BelSU scientists keep on analysing the grape berries from the collection of cold-hardy grape varieties, which need no coverage for overwintering. The researchers reaped the first harvest and obtained samples of processed products. The registered product represents a higher stage, as it requires deep processing of agricultural products. Not only have the scientists dealcoholized the wine using an improved technology they covered by a patent, but also examined and studied the substance as a biological additive. Their research proved that as a product Rezvitrin complies with all the necessary standards and requirements.

Successful registration of a biologically active food supplement with Belgorod State University as both applicant and manufacturer is only a step in a large-scale work with Rezvitrin. The scientists are planning to further research into the favourable impact of resveratrol and other flavonoids can have on fertility.

Their own method of quantitative determination of biologically active substances using a highly efficient LC method with UV detection, allows the researchers to determine fifteen components of biologically active substances. As scientists say, the greatest interest is sparked by the polydatin, a natural precursor of resveratrol, due to its greater bioavailability. Belgorod scientists are currently studying all the grape varieties growing in the BelSU Botanical Garden. They work on distinguishing those that make best raw materials for dietary supplements, both for combination of appearance, aroma, taste, texture and the content and quality of biologically active substances.
