The study of Duroc pigs enable BelSU researchers at Genomic Breeding Research Centre to reveal a gene mutation not previously described in the world literature
Pig breeding is a strategic area for ensuring the national food security. Accordingly, great importance is attached to the research on the breeding and genetics of pigs whose genome was sequenced in 2009 and the genes functions were identified. However, work continues on identifying individual mutations in functionally important genes and describing their role in the expression of economically essential characteristics.
Part of this work was carried out by the Genomic Breeding Research Center of Belgorod State University as part of development of SNP panel for pig breeding (RFBR grant No. 20-3480004/20). The centre specialists analyzed the gene of leptin hormone playing a significant role in lipid metabolism and related to regulation of feed consumption, weight and fat yield. These gene mutations are actively used in breeding as molecular genetic markers of animal fat.
Currently, the research is underway to define breeding significance of this mutation. It is suggested that the mutation can potentially act as a genetic marker of lipid metabolism and fat content in case of pigs.
