Our own Professor Mikhail Churnosov was one of the authors of an article entitled 'Polymorphic Locus rs652438 of the MMP12 Gene Is Associated with the Development of Arterial Hypertension in Women'. The researchers examined 584 women from the local area (209 healthy, and 375 with arterial hypertension), and identified genetic variants of matrix metalloproteinase genes (rs243865 MMP2, rs17577 MMP9, and rs652438 MMP12). These particular genes are some of the key compounds in the body that are involved in various biological processes that play an important role in the development of arterial hypertension. The work concluded that a certain polymorphic variant of the MMP12 gene (rs652438) is associated with the development of arterial hypertension in women living in the Central Black Earth Region. The work will hopefully be used to identify women at risk of developing hypertension, but there is still more work to be done. This will involve listing genetic markers, and seeking similar results for men. The work was published in the 'Arterial Hypertension' journal as part of a series of four articles on the genetic markers for arterial hypertension in the male and female population that have been published in reputable journals such as 'Cardiology', and the 'Russian Journal of Cardiology'. There will be two more related articles published by the team, in the near future.
