Belgorod State University students and staff joined Metropolitan Ioann of Belgorod and Stary Oskol and Evgeny Savchenko, the Governor of the Region, on the 22nd June, to mark the anniversary of the first day of war with the Nazis
The commemoration took place on Cathedral Square in the middle of Belgorod, next to the Eternal Flame and the statue of the Sorrowful Mother. Representatives from many local businesses, and government and educational organisations, laid wreaths at the statue as part of the national 'Wave of Remembrance' in honour of victims of the most brutal war in history. Belgorod suffered a familiar fate to other Slavic cities occupied by the fascists, with nearly all of the buildings razed, and the population reduced from more than 50,000 to 1,500. Many inhabitants were enslaved, starved or killed, and many became refugees. The occasion was also marked by a candlelight vigil at 4am (the hour of the invasion) at the Battle of Kursk Diorama.
